S/V Bob

Our boat is a Catalina 50 which has three guest cabins.  Each cabin has a large double berth with a private head and shower.  The boat has been customized with equipment to keep us warm and dry while sailing in Southeast Alaska, including three heating systems, a hard dodger, and a completely enclosed cockpit.  We have a 110 HP auxiliary diesel engine to provide power when the wind is too light to sail. Activities depend largely on what your interests are, but include sailing, hiking, fishing, visiting small communities, watching icebergs calve off of tidewater glaciers, and soaking in natural hotsprings.  The area we sail in is composed mostly of the Tongass National Forest, Admiralty Island National Monument, and Glacier Bay National Park.  Wildlife is abundant on all our itineraries.  We often see humpback whales, orca whales, Dall's porpoise, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, harbor porpoise, sea otters, river otters, and other sea mammals.

Photos:
On shore we regularly see deer, mountain goats, brown bear, and black bear.  There are lots of birds including bald eagles, loons, king fishers, gulls, terns, surf scoters, white winged scoters, harlequin ducks, golden eyes, mergansers and many more.  Let us know what your interests are and we'll suggest a time and itinerary to maximize your priorities

Most of our itineraries sail on the protected waters of the Inside Passage.  We normally anchor in isolated coves for the night although we sometimes tie up to a dock.  No sailing experience is necessary--you are welcome to do as much or as little as you like while you're aboard.  We do all the cooking and cleaning--all you have to do is relax and enjoy the incredible scenery and wildlife of Southeast Alaska.

We take up to six people on the boat each trip.  We do six day trips (leave the dock at 9 AM on day 1 and get back in at 9 AM on day 7) in and out of Sitka.  The cost of this trip is $2445/person.  There is 6% sales tax on any trip that originates and returns to Sitka.  We also do nine day trips (leave at 9 AM on day 1 and get in at 9 AM on day 10) that normally work between towns, for example we might leave Sitka and arrive in Petersburg or Juneau.  The 9 day trips run $3245/person.  Our Glacier Bay trips are nine days from Juneau, returning to Juneau on the morning of day 10.  Glacier Bay trips run $3445/person.  If you have a group of six (that fills the whole boat) there is a 10% discount.  There is a 50% surcharge to take a double cabin for one person.  We can do trips of custom length but 6 days is the shortest trip we do.  Sound Sailing has been running skippered sailing charters in Southeast Alaska for twenty years.  I run some of the trips myself and our other skippers have several years of experience sailing in our area.

Your trip will be organized and skippered by Sound Sailing's founder, skipper, and cook, Rick Fleischman. Rick has a Master's license issued by the US Coast Guard. He grew up sailing in the Seattle area and has skippered and delivered boats around the world for over thirty years. Rick has been showing people the wonders of his Southeast Alaska home for almost 20 years

Longer trips are available and encouraged! The only thing better
than a week in Alaska aboard the sailing vessel BOB is two weeks aboard! Longer
time periods offer the opportunity to explore a larger area or the option to explore
each area in more detail with less time spent in travel each day.
Specifications

Sailing Vessel BOB is a 1993 Catalina 50 which started its charter career in the warm aqua waters of the British Virgin Islands out of Tortola. In 1999 we purchased the boat, which then underwent a complete factory refurbishment in Florida before being trucked out to Alaska. After 15 years of operation in Alaska, we know what equipment is needed for the safe and comfortable operation of a sailboat in northern waters.

Electronics include GPS (Global Positioning System), Radar, Color Fish Finder, Autopilot, Electronic Charts, Wind, Speed, and Depth instruments. Above decks, our spacious cockpit is protected from the elements with a custom fiberglass dodger. We have lots of room on the deck for fishing, watching wildlife, or just enjoying the spectacular Alaskan scenery.
